We are now continuing a bit further west on the Tonto Trail from Hance Rapid, reaching the east entrance of Mineral Canyon at mile 1.0. We remain near the Colorado River, but we have now climbed to about 500 feet above it, and our view of the Colorado is now restricted to only the downstream portion as we start to make the turn to head south and up into Mineral Canyon. Looking across the river, you can still just pick out the route of the old asbestos miners trail – if you look closely. Look just to the left and below a prominent white splotch of mine tailings and you will find it.
If you look back behind the river and up towards Mineral Canyon, you can just see Coronado Butte coming into view, and it will become more prominent as the trail swings away from the river and into the canyon.
